Pinata Game Variations

Everyone loves a pinata. Most people know pinata is played by taking turns hitting a pinata while blindfolded until it bust and all the goodies come tumbling out.

What most people don't think of is the equality in the goodie snatching. There are many variations to filling a pinata as there is to playing the game. We often throw goodies down close to the children that are not getting a good share, the kids are so busy they often don't notice where the goodies are coming from. For some more ideas on how to fill your pinatas check out Pinata Ideas.

How to set up the game:

  • Fill the pinata with confetti, shred, candy, and toys.
  • Paint a circle or use masking tape and mask a circle far enough from the pinata area where everyone will be safe, at least a 12-foot radius. Although this should be a safe distance, there should be Adult Supervision all the way through this game!
  • Secure the pinata with rope or drying line cord, to make it extra exciting use a pulley to move the pinata up and down using your rope.

To Play the Game (General Instructions):

  • Children stand on the circle you made.
  • line the children up by smallest to biggest
  • Blindfold the child who is first, spin them around 3-4 times give them the pinata buster and let them try to hit the pinata.
  • Let them take 2-3 whacks at the pinata before going to the next child. Children should only hit left to right not up and down.
  • Instruct the children that are observing to tell the "hitter" the wrong way causing them to hit the air.

Options for children 3 years and under:

Pull String Pinatas:

  • Get a pull string pinata instead of the standard pinata that requires a bat or pinata buster. The pull string pinata has pull string (streamers) hanging underneath and children will take turns pulling a pull string (streamer), only one is the lucky pull string (streamer) which will open the pinata. Make a pull string pinata. Although we offer you instructions on how to make a pull pinata these are also available for purchase.

If you don't like the pull string pinata idea and want to have a pinata at your child's party try these ideas:

  • Don't blindfold the child but do spin them around before they hit
